Do-It-Yourself High-Accuracy Drone Mapping Training

Hosted by: Portland Community College

April 26, 2019 from 9:00am to 4:00pm

Presented by: Anatum GeoMobile Solutions

A look at the FAA UAV Rules, drone aircraft technology, and sample mapping projects illustrating what you can accomplish with an inexpensive consumer drone

Description:

You no longer need a traditional FAA Pilot license and a $50,000 drone to create centimeter-level aerial photos, accurate elevation contours and 3D models. You can accomplish that today with a $1,500 consumer drone.

Join us for a discussion on the basic concepts of how UAVs work and how you can fly them to produce surprisingly accurate GIS data (eg. orthophotos, DEMs, elevation contours, 3D models) using an inexpensive drone that you can purchase in big box stores.

The training workshop will also discuss, in detail, the mission software required to program the drone to fly specific patterns as well as the image processing software used to create the final product.

The workshop is taught by experienced pilots who have flown a variety of missions over the past five years.

Highlights:

  • How to obtain an FAA drone pilot license.
  • Hobby flying vs. flying for business.
  • Drone flying rules. Where you can and can't fly. FAA rules and common sense.
  • Mission control software review. Use your iOS or Android device to control the drone mission.
  • Airframes; rotorcraft, fixed-wing, and hybrids. Pros and cons.
  • The new Phantom 4 Pro RTK drone. Static display. Sample project.
  • Sensors (eg. RGB cameras, Lidar, thermal, NDVI). Costs, quality.
  • Image processing software. Esri Drone2Map, Pix4D, Agisoft.
  • Using ground control points. Should you or shouldn't you?
  • Producing orthophotos, DEMs, elevation contours, and 3D models.
