Matt and Esri Co-teach Collector Workshops

Using High-Accuracy GNSS Receivers with Collector for ArcGIS

In 2017, Matt helped teach an Esri Workshop on Collector for ArcGIS where he provided his knowledge and experiences with Mobile GIS workflows and GNSS technical knowledge.  The workshop was co-taught by ESRI’s Matthew Twietmeyer and Amadea Azerki at the Esri Sacramento Office.  From our rental fleet, Matt provided Field iPads, submeter, and centimeter-grade Eos Arrow GNSS receivers for the outdoor field data collection portion of the workshop.  He also shared field experiences from his time as a field biologist and project manager for environmental consulting firms.  Matt also shared experiences of helping clients transition from old handheld GPS and software to full Mobile GIS solutions using tablets and ESRI’s Collector for ArcGIS.

Matt provided the students with demo iPads, submeter, and centimeter-grade Eos Arrow GNSS receivers for the outdoor field data collection portion of the workshop.  He also shared field experiences from his time as a field biologist and project manager for environmental consulting firms.  Matt also shared experiences of helping clients transition from old handheld GPS and software to full Mobile GIS solutions using tablets and ESRI’s Collector for ArcGIS.

Staff and attendees battled 106°F temperatures during the local heatwave, but all had fun and learned how to fully deploy Collector to field crews and the setup and workflows for both submeter and RTK GNSS equipment.

The classroom portion was focused on:
    • Introducing students to high-accuracy GNSS equipment,
    • Working with ArcPro to prepare data, publish data to ArcGIS Online for use with Collector
    • Configuring Collector and setting up GNSS receivers

All of this was followed by a final session back in the classroom to view field collected data in ArcGIS Online, ask final questions, and wrap up everything with a final summary.  Everything went great, and RS Geospatial looks forward to co-teaching more workshops with ESRI.

With the success of this first workshop, Matt A. and Matt T. took the workshop on the road to Fresno, Clovis, Tulare, Visalia, and Reno, Nevada.
